Sometimes the way a room is laid out can make a huge difference to how you feel. We all know that having less clutter makes us feel better. Flowers and bright accents in a room can make all the difference but then overdoing the colour can sometimes just be a bit too much. It really can be a fine balance. My ideal room would be really quite light and white with accessories changed for the season to just add the touches of colour.

To make a room light and airy so it is easy to relax in I think the first step is the floor. My perfect idea would be white laminate flooring. This can then be topped with a coloured rug to match the cushions and other colour pops like vases, candles etc. This to me makes a room easy to change whenever you fancy without too much expense. With white or light grey walls the lovely accessories you buy really become the focus. A good quality floor then will last a long time and it is easy to change the room around it whenever you like.
Making the room light and getting as much natural light as possible is key too. This is just not possible with net curtains and big heavy curtains so a great choice would be shuttered. These shutters my friend Charlie has would really make the room perfect. They are modern and allow as much natural light as possible whilst still being ideal for shutting all the light out at night.
With such a light neutral room I would dress it for Christmas in silvers and purples I think. Autumn, it would be lovely with accents of burnt orange and deep reds and browns. In the spring/summer it would have to be some bright yellows and greens to really bring the outside in. By adding these colour pops in such a neutral room I think it really gives you a feeling of relaxation. When you are stressed the neutral colours of the walls, flooring and shutters slow down the mind and help to relax you.
The colour accents then just add a little happiness I think to a room. However, you feel how can you not smile when in a relatively neutral room you have beautiful flowers or a comfy bright blanket. To me this is what neutral colours do, they allow the feelings and mood to easily be changed with colour.
What do you think? What brightens a room for you? What colours in a room would help you to relax? Is your dream relaxing room like mine? Do let me know as I love to hear new ideas. My favourite colour is teal, how about yours?
